Holga Week 2020

Canberra, Dark Room

A week between 1-7 October 2020 where artists from around the world were called to load film into their Holga cameras and photographed for the sake of making new art. I had just received my Ebay purchased Holga 120GCFN camera in the mail and went into researching the Holga community so I gave it a red hot crack. Captured in camera, hand-developed at Photo Access and scanned by me. This was a truly fun part of my art making practice as the full process from real life frames captured to being on screen was all complete within 3 days.

Image 1 is called ‘Unfolding itself into a blossom’ is a self portrait of the the hand I usually use to focus my camera. With this particular camera there is no focusing ability, so taking that opportunitiy to reach out and touch some beautiful springtime blossoms made me feel very happy. 2020 has made touching substances seem so much more important. Touch isn't just a sense used to interact with the world; it also seems to be very important to a human's well-being.

Image 2 is called ‘The places in us that have known love’ which was taken a few weeks after my husband lost his mother unexpectedly. This was the first smile I had seen from him since the events that had occurred. The image to me speaks truth about grief recovery; trying to see the good in each day and immersing yourself in nature.

The Holga Week 2020 gallery which showcases the work of 142 other international artists who contributed into this exciting virtual event hosted by some really cool fellow photographers can be found here
